Owen 1; Parents 0

We learned quickly who's in charge here. And it ain't us. Owen eats on his terms - when, how much, how quickly. And, of course, he sleeps on his terms.

We've endured some difficult nights in our days. All nighters at work, fraternity hellweek, a couple of nights of being overserved at the bar, the great blackout of NYC, the ALCS in 2003 and the Super Bowl in 2008. But last night topped them all. Virtually everything you've seen in the movies that happens to parents with newborns occurred last night. We'll spare you the gory details, but suffice it to say that little sleep was had by any of us, two of the three of us shed tears and we all wondered if we were cut out for this.

But with the rising of the sun, which Owen and Dad witnessed together, came a new day and newfound hope. And this was confirmed with our visit to the pediatrician, who assured us we weren't the worst parents of all time (she declined to specify, only insisting we weren't the worst).

The pediatrician's visit wasn't all high fives. Apparently Owen is 40th percentile in weight and 50th in height. Not the report card his Type A parents were looking for. Needless to say it was a long stroll home - we had a heart to heart and Owen has agreed to a couple of weeks of training at Athletes Performance (that may be gender-specific humor).

Below is a picture of Owen after our talk.

Mick McGuire, a close friend of ours, came by today to see our much heralded son. Mick was quite impressed with the bear claws that little O has for hands (I think both sets of grandfathers get credit for those genes...). Note the fist that's cocked in case Mick gets out of line.

Mom and Dad are pooped and are dreading what the night has in store. Hopefully the new system we've devised will enable us to get some rest...

Below are a couple of video clips of Owen swinging for your viewing pleasure.

Hey, don't talk about my grandson that way....he's PERFECT in every way. I hate to say it Suey, but given your demeanor as a baby...you were my first so plenty of angst hallmarked your first days and nights without any sleep....what goes around famously comes around.
But, help is on the way! Grammy and Grandma will heed to the rescue next week, although you will probably have him all figured out by then....or vice versa. Get some sleep and give little O a big hug from Grammy and Papa first. Love you all!
